Water Conservation
"a
key component to building green"
Water Conservation- includes rain water collection and
storage, low-flow plumbing fixtures and drought tolerant
landscaping.
Dew Point
- moisture turns to liquid at the dew point. A temperature at which air can no
longer hold moisture
Capillary Action
- although water is normally "gravity driven", there are a few instances;
freezing, pressure build up, etc. where water can also travel in an upwards
direction, through porous materials, causing water infiltration which in turn
can cause mildew and mold inside a home or building.
Water Diffusion
- water, like heat, always flows from areas of higher concentration to areas of
lower concentration.
With these few things in mind, we have concern for
proper roof installation as well as infrastructure and foundation moisture
abatement.
Roofing Facts
- use 35 year architectural shingles or better for
roofing. Cedar and slate shingles have a longer life expectancy than standard
composition shingles.
Water Cisterns
- The Texas Water Development Board's findings show that approximately 1/2
gallon of water can be collected per square foot of roof per 1 inch of rainfall.
Rain water has natural purity and softness. In
addition, rain water is almost neutral in PH and has no mineral or salt content.
Vegetation thrive from rain water both naturally as well as from water being
collected in water cisterns.
